How to Become a Surgical Technologist

Surgical technology is an up and coming career path in the health care field. Individuals who enjoy hands-on work but aren’t interested in dealing with patient and family care may find that time spent in the operating room is time well spent. Surgical techs are responsible for sterilizing operating rooms, gathering equipment, counting supplies, and aiding the nurses and doctors with whatever tasks they deem necessary. Want to become a surgical technologist? Here are some things to keep in mind.

Surgical Tech Education

Start by looking for a dedicated surgical technology program. These programs can last anywhere from 9 to 24 months depending on the type of program you choose. You may opt for a technical school, military training, a junior college, or a larger university. The path you choose will depend on your finances, time scenarios, family life, and other personal situations.

Obtaining Certification

No matter what program you choose, you’ll finish your education by sitting for a state-mandated certification exam. Make sure you look into your state’s guidelines for becoming a surgical technologist before you even sign up for classes. It would be a shame to waste your time and money on a class only to find that a past mistake or life change makes you ineligible for certification.

Looking for a Job

Make sure you network with others in the health care field, act professionally in medical settings (regardless of why you are there), and talk to your school career counselor. All of these things will make it easier for you to obtain a job as a surgical tech once you have finished school. While jobs in the medical field are easier to come by than in many other fields, the field of health care is still competitive and demanding. Do your best to present a professional face with every interaction.

Surgical technology is an incredible field but comes with great responsibilities. If you’re ready for a fast-paced, stressful, yet rewarding environment, this career is for you!
